SEO techniques

Search Engine Optimization is a series of techniques used to improve traffic to your website from search engines. These techniques include using web standards developed by the W3C and having keyword rich content.

Standardization of the web helps designers and developers generate a common ground with different browsers. Some of the standards of the standards that was set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium are that there should no usage of deprecated tags in your markup, that all tags should be lowercased, that your HTML/structure, CSS/presentation( NO MORE INLINE STYLES!!!!!) and/or JavaScript/behavior should all be separated, and that attributes should be in quotations.

Having keyword rich content helps the search engines find your site. One way of achieving this is having more content than code. For example, when older web designers use tables to build an entire site, it creates more code because you have to use <tr>’s, <td>’s, <table>’s, <table>’s inside<table>’s and other table related tags. Not only is this not W3C compliant but is very confusing and complicated. Nowadays, you should be able to develop a web site using <div>’s which is a whole lot less confusing and has less code than <table>’s and can be easily manipulated using CSS. This method allows your content to shine through and to be easily searched by search engines.

Another method is to use attributes like title or longdesc in your markup for images and headings. This helps create more content for your site and adds findability to your content.

These techniques are important because this helps to keep the user get to your site, find what they are looking for and keep them coming back for more building a better user experience which can improve traffic to your site.
