Email marketing

Email Marketing, as the name suggests, is the marketing of a brand, service and/ or product through email. When used correctly it is a good way to promote products in a fast and dependable way. Some advantages to campaigning through email are:

  • that you can reach many people very quickly
  • saves on paper
  • emails can be sent to other people, in a way becoming viral marketing
  • you can reach out to your audience instead of just waiting for business
  • you can track who is interested in your email
  • you can generate more business quicker
  • finally, it’s less expensive than print advertisements

Some goals to keep in mind when sending email campaigns are:

  • you must have valuable information
  • Easy to read subject lines featuring
    • The Companys name
    • Title of email pertaining to the content
  • Your company’s logo
  • You must follow the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003

CAN-SPAM Act of 2003
The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 was signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 16 of that year. The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 established national standards on commercial email to protect against unwanted email advertising.

It is imperative to follow the guidelines set forth in the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 because a violation can result in a $11,000 penalty for each provision breached.

Some of the provisions of the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 include:

  • the ban of misleading header information
  • requires emails to have a opt-out link or button
  • prohibits deceptive subject lines
  • requires real postal address and the email must be labeled an advertisement

To have a valid email campaign you should have a meaningful subject line, physical address, a real phone number, and a place for users to unsubscribe if they want to. You should also have a little reminder so users who may have forgotten about your site can remember you and not put you in the spam folder.

Somethings you would want to avoid when doing an Email Campaign:

  • All caps in the subject line
  • Not following CAN-SPAM Act of 2003
  • Sending too many emails in a short period of time
  • Misleading subject lines
  • using words like “buy now!!”or “sale!!!”
  • using exclamation points

Rules and regulations aside you should consider how you can get potential customers to subscribe to your email marketing scheme in a legal and safe way. One major way for potential customers to sign up is to have a form on your web page that tells the user that you would like to send them updates and valuable information through email. You could use a Email marketing service like MailChimp to do so. And all you have to do is sign up for MailChimp and follow the steps. Hopefully, you will gain some revenue from your email marketing.
